In the Shinto faith, shimenawa ropes serve to ward off negative energy. The three tassels are often interpreted as a symbol of the harmony between heaven, earth, and humanity, or as the embodiment of protective forces watching over the threshold. Each piece is handcrafted in Miyazaki Prefecture by artisans continuing the centuries-old tradition of working with natural straw from rice terraces.
